I’m not sure having the sha displayed on every commit is a useful information. Not every Discourse administrator are developers.
Even though, I think it makes it harder to follow the list of changes.
And if someone really want the sha, hovering on the link displays it in the browser’s status bar.
My reasoning was that currently, I want to see, how far I am from the latest commit. My version’s SHA is shown in the admin, but it’s hard to see in the commit history, where exactly is that.
Maybe displaying something like: 2 commits behind?
I agree with ZogStriP. Looks like the github API’s commit compare API can tell us how many commits behind you are: http://developer.github.com/v3/repos/commits/#compare-two-commits
